Extreme Weather Policy

5-Jan-18  The current Bowls Australia Weather Policy (a copy can be found on the BTS Policies section of the website) leaves it up to Controlling Authorities to determine a temperature as specified within its Conditions of Play upon which play will be suspended by the Controlling Body.   The current BTS Conditions of Play for 2017-18 do not specify any such temperature.

The BTS Board has agreed that the following (extracted from the Bowls Australia Extreme Weather Policy dated July 2009 will apply for Bowls Tasmania South Pennant and Championships with immediate effect:

  • When the temperature reaches 35 degrees, play/competition should be interrupted at 20 minute intervals (at the completion of the end in play) for a period of 5 minutes, during which time, drinks should be made available.    Any time limit imposed on the interrupted match will be waived.
  • Where the temperature reaches 38 degrees, it is recommended that play/competition be discontinued.
  • Should a calibrated weather station be available at the venue, the following guidelines will then be applied.
  • When the heat stress index reaches 36 at the venue play/competition should be interrupted at 20 minute intervals (at the completion of the end in play) for a period of 5 minutes, during which time, drinks should be made available.    Any time limit imposed on the interrupted match will be waived.
  • Where the heat stress index reaches 40 at the venue, play/competition will be suspended.
  • The heat stress index at the venue will be determined by the Tournament Director.
  • (The heat stress index is a combination of humidity and the temperature and can be readily found on a smart phone using Google Weather.)

The above will be built into BTS Conditions of Play for 2018-19.

Side Captains and Umpires need to be aware of the above.
